Turtle Soup NOT sold here!!!!

Do you know that Turtle soup is a soup made from the flesh of the turtle, often the endangered green turtle? In Asian countries turtle soup is a Chinese delicacy known for its rich herbal taste. The meat, skin and innards of the turtle are used in the soup.

Here are some facts from the Malaysia Wildlife Conservation Awareness Campaign:-

1)14% of Malaysia’s mammals are listed by The World Conservation Union (IUCN) as endangered
2)30 species of turtle ever discovered, only 7 are left.
3)Less than 1,500 Borneo Pygmy elephants are found in the world.
4)It is estimated that there are less than 20 Sumatran rhinoceros left in Borneo.
5)The Bornean species of orangutan is highly endangered, and the Sumatran species is critically endangered, according to the IUCN Red List of mammals, and both are listed on Appendix I of CITES.

Traditional Chinese medicine also belief that various tiger parts has medicinal properties, including pain killers and aphrodisiacs. Some aphrodisiacs appear to gain their reputation from the principles of sympathetic magic, e.g. oysters, due to their shape. This also explains the trade in the phallic-looking horn of the rhinoceros, which is endangering this animal. Other animal-based aphrodisiacs gain their reputation from the apparent virility or aggressiveness of the animal source — such as tiger penis — also endangering the species.

Well, anyway these days we've got Viagra and whatever those email spammers send us anyway. Probably safer and more effective than all these unproven herbal "cures"...

And there will come one day when our children or our children's children won't even know what a tiger is...

This post is so much more pleasant to read than those about men and women getting raped. But still, reading it makes me so very guilty because turtle soup is one of my favourite dishes or should I say, soups.

I recall what an old friend told me in my face many years ago when I ordered a bowl of the soup in a hawker centre. She said, "How could you eat this? Do you that I used to keep a pet turtle?" (I need not explain why we are no longer friends now.)

And you know what? Now they even have an ice-cream in turtle soup flavour! Yucks.

It is very sad to learn that people REALLY do think turtle eggs and turtle meat are aphrodisiac when in fact, they aren't!

We need more people like you, who would voluntarily discourage people from eating turtle eggs and soup because the turtles are fast becoming extinct!

Thank you, for helping spread the awareness :D

Thanks for the support on the campaign.

It is all about demand / supply. If we are able to cut down the demand for these "exotic delicacies", we will effectively be able to do our bit for these wildlife conservation.

Well informed people make choices from a position of knowledge. The purchasing power can be the driving force behind positive or negative impacts on the wildlife : ))

happy 2008!

pktan: Welkam to my humble kopitiam and it was certainly not a problem to support the campaign. It's so true wat you said about the supply and demand.

I am so relieved to learn from my friend Walter that the turtle used in the soup sold here in S'pore is farmed, i.e. the soft-shell variety and not the endangered green turtle. But as part of the deal with Walter, I will have to give up (the guilt of) eating shark's fin to continue indulging in turtle soup.

But there is one problem - if you are eating out for your CNY reunion dinner here, you will find that most restaurants only offer packages with shark's fin as one of the dishes. I think it will take a long time and a lot of customer resistance to make them change that.

Firehorse aka Kopi Soh said...

Victor, thanks so much for the info, it's good to know, ya sharks's fin is another story altogether. Very hard to stop people from eating them. I will print something to update people on this.
